Window Film in Marmalade, Salt Lake City
Marmalade climbs the west side of Capitol Hill on streets named for fruit trees, like Quince and Apricot. Small pioneer-era cottages stand beside new townhomes, and most windows look west over the rail yards toward the airport and the Great Salt Lake.
MarmaladeWest Sun and Window Film in Marmalade
The slope faces almost due west, so the afternoon and evening sun pours straight into Marmalade windows for much of the year. In summer, rooms can stay hot well after dark. In winter, the low sun comes in under eaves and glares off snow on the flats below.
Heat control film is the most common request here. A near-clear grade leaves the sunset over the lake in full view and still takes a big bite out of the evening heat. In winter, a light glare film helps living rooms and home offices that face straight into the low sun.
The view from Marmalade is also unusually open. Below the slope there is little to block the sun between the house and the horizon: rail yards, warehouses and I-15, then the flat land toward the airport. That is why west windows here run hotter than similar windows in more sheltered parts of the city.
Historic Cottages on Marmalade Streets
Some of Salt Lake's oldest houses are in Marmalade, small adobe and brick cottages built by early settlers, many with tiny windows and very old glass. Parts of the neighborhood are in the Capitol Hill historic district, so exterior changes may need review.
Clear UV film that does not change the appearance of the windows is the safest option. We check old glazing carefully, since many of these panes are original and fragile.
Some cottages have been enlarged with rear additions that use modern dual-pane windows, so one house can have very old glass on the street side and new low-E glass in back. We treat each type with a film suited to it, keeping the street side looking original.

Privacy Film for New Marmalade Townhomes
Newer townhomes and small apartment buildings have filled vacant lots in Marmalade over the past two decades. They are often three stories with large windows, built close to older cottages and to each other. Upper windows can look straight into neighbors' yards and rooms.
Frosted, gradient or reflective film on those windows restores privacy for both sides. Gradient film keeps the top of the window clear for the view west while blocking the line of sight from next door.
Townhome associations in the newer projects usually have rules about exterior appearance, so we bring samples and data sheets that the board can review. Interior frosted film is generally accepted, and reflective film may need a closer look.
Commercial Window Film Near 300 West
At the bottom of the hill, 300 West and the surrounding blocks have shops, restaurants and new mixed-use buildings. The Marmalade Branch of the Salt Lake City Public Library anchors the area. Businesses here deal with west sun on storefronts and need glare and UV control for displays and seating areas.
For mixed-use buildings, we provide a consistent film for ground-floor commercial and upper residential units so the building looks uniform.
New mixed-use buildings at the foot of the hill put cafes and small shops at street level. Those ground-floor tenants often use anti-graffiti and security film on exposed glass as well as solar film on west-facing storefronts.

Marmalade Homeowner Window Film Questions
Does the historic district cover Marmalade?
Parts of the neighborhood fall within the Capitol Hill historic district. Clear film on the inside of the glass is rarely a concern, but check with city planning before installing tinted or mirrored film on street-facing windows.
Can I keep my view of the lake with heat film?
Yes. Selective film is engineered to pass visible light and stop infrared, so the sunset still looks like a sunset.
Can privacy film cover only the bottom half of a townhome window?
Yes. Banded or gradient film covers the lower portion and leaves the upper part clear for light and sky.
Is a small cottage job worth your time?
Yes. Small jobs are common in Marmalade, and old glass gets the same care as a large project.
Can one house have different films on old and new windows?
Yes. Original panes and newer dual-pane additions often need different products, and we choose films that look consistent from the street.
